- Welcome to Fork & Trowel! I'm Frank Niccoli, a passionate horticulturist with over 70 years of experience dedicated to sustainable landscaping and environmental education. My journey in this vibrant field has been shaped by a deep commitment to fostering innovative horticultural practices and advancing water conservation initiatives. I founded The Village Gardener, where I’ve had the honor of receiving multiple awards, including three Sweepstakes Awards for garden construction and maintenance. As a past president of the California Landscape Contractors Association, I led significant projects like the Water Management program, impacting over 1,200 contractors statewide. Additionally, I served as the editor of the Landscape Data Manual, further contributing to the knowledge and standards of the industry. My academic journey includes coursework in Business Psychology from the University of San Francisco and Horticulture from California Polytechnic State University, which laid a solid foundation for my career. I have also contributed to the education of future horticulturists as an instructor and program director at Foothill College, developing internship programs that placed 147 students in prominent Bay Area companies. I played a vital role in Foster City's Environmental Sustainability Task Force, where I and my fellow committee members proposed 59 actionable recommendations for establishing a comprehensive sustainability policy for the city. Additionally, I have collaborated with organizations like the California Native Plant Society to develop educational curricula that empower others to appreciate and protect our natural environment. Recognition for my work includes being named Member of the Year multiple times by the California Landscape Contractors Association and earning the Water Champion of the Year award from Sustainable Silicon Valley. I've also been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network, showcasing my dedication to environmental sustainability. Outside of horticulture, I am a published poet and culinary enthusiast, always seeking to blend the beauty of nature with the art of cooking.
